The Smashed Pear Cocktail

Here's a light and lucsious cocktail recipe to welcome Spring! Pears and elderflower liqueur are made for each other. Add a bit of citrus, vodka, and top with soda. A sparkling and flavorful vodka cocktail for warm weather sipping. Enjoy!

THE SMASHED PEAR COCKTAIL RECIPE

Prep Time: 5 minutes Yield: one cocktail

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 flesh of a ripe small pear, peeled and cut into small chunks

  • 2 ounces vodka or light rum

  • 1 ounce elderflower liqueur

  • 1 ounce simple syrup

  • juice from 2-3 lemon wedges

  • 4 ounces sparkling unsweetened soda

  • Ingredients to garnish the cocktail and rim the glass: I use a lemon slice to wet the glass rim, then dip the glass in a mixture of Maldon sea salt flakes and sugar. Tajin seasoning is also an excellent choice to add some heat.

Method:

  1. Rim a tall glass and set it aside.

  2. In an empty cocktail shaker, add the flesh of 1/2 a small pear. Muddle the pear well until it is frothy and broken down.

  3. Add in the vodka, elderflower liqueur, simple syrup, and lemon juice. Stir until well blended. Add the top to the cocktail shaker and shake the cocktail for several seconds.

  4. Remove the shaker top and pour the contents into your favorite tall glass.

  5. Top the cocktail with unflavored sparkling soda, and gently stir.

  6. Finally, add ice to the cocktail and stir well.

  7. Garnish with pear slices and serve.

Please use a ripe pear, as we want the flesh to break down into a frothy liquid. Also, you don't have to peel the pear, I just prefer it that way.

Here's a fantastic muddler, the one I use. A bargain for 7 bucks!
